The Boxer Rebellion in a movie

I think nobody has commented it yet:

“URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT: New York Casting Call – August 3rd
Be an extra in a New Line Cinema feature-film starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, with a special guest appearance from The Boxer Rebellion”

30th July, 2009

If I’m not wrong the lads were recording and finishing their part last week. Was there any TBR American fan? Any information? I think this is the movie: ‘Going The Distance’ (“a look at the trials and tribulations of a long-distance relationship”). A romantic comedy? Promotion has some mysterious ways

Review of ‘Union’ in ‘Mondosonoro’

And just one year and a half later (the album was ‘published’ in Spain on March 30th 2010)... ‘Mondosonoro’, a free Spanish music magazine (a sort of arrogant and smug NME about indie music), has posted a review for ‘Union’ in their June issue. I’ve translated it:

http://www.mondosonoro.com/detas/DetalleCriticaObra/tabid/96/Default.aspx?titular=Union&fecha=01/06/2010 12:15:00
http://issuu.com/mondosonoro/docs/mondosonoro_junio_10 (page 50)

*** 3 out of 5 stars

There’s no bigger misfortune for a band than finding themselves in no man’s land when your record company disappears off the face of the earth as if by magic. That’s what happened to The Boxer Rebellion soon after publishing their debut ‘Exits’ five years ago. After publishing on iTunes ‘Union’, which we’re dealing with (and after checking their success in the digital charts), the Londoners decided to release physical copies of this epic album, which could be influenced by Coldplay, Kings Of Leon or Editors themselves before introducing the synths, under their own responsibility. ‘Flashing Red Light Means Go’ galloping drums welcome us and, together with the single ‘Evacuate’, they involve two crystal-clear uncut diamonds if we compare them with their debut songs. Frontman Nathan Nicholson feed himself through the album with his affected voice but those bright guitar lines (‘Spitting Fire’, for instance, will have delighted The Edge), even repeating themselves as the essential leitmotiv through the songs, fulfil their mission consolidating The Boxer Rebellion as one of those bands halfway between the mainstream and the alternative scene, being able to please an heterogeneous target which is hungry for new faces in the always trite British pop.

The drumming on Union

Does anyone else think the drumming on Union is amazing ? Obviously the drums stand out on FRLMG, but they’re also brilliant on tracks like Soviets, Silent Movie, Move On, etc. In fact Piers’s talent with the sticks is all over this album.

It’s alright I’m not a relation or anything, just think Piers is up there with the best drummers around at the moment, like the guys in Bloc Party and the Arctic Monkeys, and he deserves some recognition !

List of all non-album tracks

Looking at other threads on here over the last couple of months, I’ve created a list of all TBR’s non-album tracks, in what I think is roughly chronological order. Now I realise this is all a bit anal, but I thought it might help TBR fans, especially the ones who’ve heard Union and Exits and want to find out about their other stuff - all of which is brilliant. Please note the first eight tracks are by the guys’ previous band.

Paper Airplane
Kiss The Girls
Light Bulb
This Week’s Love Song
Lens
Red Leader
Tempting *
Satellite *

Caution *
Heart Attack *
Palisade *
You & I (In Decline) *
The Rescue
In The Empire
In Pursuit
Outerspace
Empty
Code Red
Before Tomorrow
Don’t Drag Your Dirty Feet
Broken Glass
JFKFC
Waiting
Murder Ballad *

The above are all the studio recorded songs (songs with a * haven’t been officially released yet though). A lot of the studio tracks are either early singles, b-sides, or songs that were previously made available for download on the band’s Myspace site.

There are also a few others that have only been heard live - From The Liars, Leaves, Den Of Thieves, The Opening, Mirrors, Winter Of 69/70, etc - some of these I’ve not heard myself though.

Finally, if you check out Nathan’s and Todd’s Myspace pages you’ll find some solo tracks too.

It’s a cliche, but someone once said that you can tell a great band by the quality of their b-sides and the songs they leave off their albums. Well, the above songs are evidence that TBR are one of the few bands that this statement truly applies to.
